FAQs for INDIVIDUALS

When I find a board I am interested in, what do I do next?
Once you have your information, we encourage you to engage in a formal or informal interview process to make sure that both you and the nonprofit are aligned in your expectations. Remember, you don’t have to keep going in the process if it doesn’t feel like the right step for you.

Will I have to give money to serve on a board?
It depends. If you are joining a charitable 501(c)(3) board, it is very likely that you will be asked to make an annual financial contribution. This gift is often used to leverage other donations and is seen as a proxy measure for the board’s commitment to the mission. We encourage organizations to be transparent about this expectation. We also encourage that there be a clear process for the board to turn that expectation into a request to you. Hopefully, the process and expectations celebrate the opportunity for giving at many levels and are not a one-size-fits-all. If you have questions, we encourage you to ask before joining the board.

Will I be paid to serve on a nonprofit board?
Likely no. The IRS and good governance practices encourage your board service to a nonprofit to be 100% voluntary to help avoid self-interest in your decision-making and stewardship of mission. Some organizations do have a policy that allows for travel reimbursement and a set stipend to offset the efforts of board service. These are important questions to ask before joining a board.

As a board member, do I have any legal responsibilities?
Likely yes. Some boards are advisory only, but most are the legal entity for the organization. This is an important point to clarify before joining a board. If the board is a legal entity, you can inquire if the organization is carrying Directors and Officers Liability Insurance as an additional protection for board service.
