Mission / Core Purpose / Core Values

The Alaska Center and The Alaska Center Education Fund envision a thriving, just, and sustainable Alaska for future generations.

The Alaska Center Education Fund (AKCEF)– a 501(c)(3) nonprofit – educates, engages, and empowers Alaskans to support clean air and water, healthy communities, and a strong democracy. Trailside Discovery Camp offers outdoor education for youth ages four to fourteen. Alaska Youth for Environmental Action (AYEA) cultivates teen leaders from around the state to be catalysts in their communities. Our Civic Engagement program educates voters and increases electoral turnout amongst BIPOC, low-income, and young voters.

The Alaska Center (AKC)– a 501(c)(4) nonprofit – engages, empowers, and elects Alaskans to stand up for clean air and water, healthy communities, and a strong democracy. The Alaska Center advocates for salmon habitat protection, advances clean energy solutions, and works to ensure all Alaskans have a voice in the decisions impacting their communities.

Briefly describe your board culture.

We are youth and community advocates, current and former legislative and gubernatorial staff who are dedicated to the mission and values of The Alaska Center organization. We are committed to the values of respect, open dialogue, and continuous learning as a board. Together the boards comprise 11 members: the AKC-C4 board has 8 board members (including 3 crossover members), and the AKCEF-C3 board has 6 board members (including 3 crossover members). We have concurrent meetings with separate votes.

Why is board diversity important to this organization?

The Alaska Center is committed to centering our work through a social justice and racial equity lens. We believe that environmental justice must include social and racial justice at every level of work, including at the individual, internal, and organizational, external levels. By being more inclusive and integrating diverse perspectives, we believe that AKC can better serve our communities and civic, climate justice, Indigenous rights, and health partners.

Within this Racial Justice and Equity framework, the Alaska Center offers a range of programs designed to cultivate diverse future leaders and enhance community engagement.
