Current Position Description

College Student Representative, Board of Directors

About Muldoon Community Market

Muldoon Community Market (MCM), formerly known as Muldoon Farmers Market, was established in 2015 to provide Alaska Made, Alaska Grown, and Alaska harvested products to the Anchorage community, including healthy fresh and prepared foods, horticultural products, and high-quality Alaskan-made artworks and crafts. Our mission is to foster commerce, entertainment, and trade in East Anchorage. In recent years, we have faced challenges with a decreasing number of board members from the original nine to three at the start of the 2025 season. As we embark on our 12th market season in 2026, we are committed to building a diverse board to guide the market’s future, restructuring our organization for a larger volunteer force, and integrating technology to modernize our processes to better serve our community.

Responsibilities

The College Student Representative brings a fresh and youthful perspective to the market.

Youth Perspective:

  • Provide insights and perspectives from a youth and student viewpoint on board discussions and decisions.
  • Advocate for initiatives that engage and attract younger demographics to the market.

Community Engagement:

  • Assist in organizing and promoting events that appeal to youth and families in the community.
  • Act as a liaison between the board and student communities, fostering relationships and collaboration.

Innovation and Creativity:

  • Suggest innovative ideas to enhance the market experience and increase youth participation.
  • Collaborate on projects and activities that integrate technology and fresh perspectives.

Learning and Growth:

  • Gain experience in governance and community service through active participation in board activities.
  • Take advantage of mentorship opportunities from experienced board members.

Market Attendance

All board members are required to attend the market during the season and perform market duties. The Market Management Committee develops the roster for each market day. Having our leadership out front demonstrates our dedication to the market and our community.

Recruiting and Fundraising

MCM Board Members are all leaders and representatives of the market and are expected to seek out new volunteers and funding opportunities to help grow our organization’s capabilities so that we may continually improve our ability to serve our community.

Briefly describe your board culture.

Our board environment is welcoming and inclusive, ensuring that every member's voice is heard and valued. We believe every board member is a critical part of our team, and that discussion and resolution of dissenting opinions is essential to guiding our organization forward. We facilitate collaboration through in-person meetings, virtual gatherings, and digital collaboration tools. Our monthly schedule for board meetings, coupled with ongoing communication via phone or digital platforms, supports a flexible and inclusive environment. We continually assess and adapt these practices to foster an even more welcoming atmosphere for all members.

Why is board diversity important to this organization?

At Muldoon Community Market, diversity means bringing together a group of individuals from different backgrounds and experiences who can provide our market with a broad range of skills, opinions, fresh ideas, and perspectives. For our board, diversity is crucial as it allows us to view our mission from multiple angles, preventing blind spots so that we may guide our organization more effectively. This enhances our mission's effectiveness by enabling us to make well-rounded decisions, better plan for the future, and better serve our community. For our market as a whole, diversity helps us build a market team that reflects the diversity of the community we serve.

Muldoon Community Market was established by a diverse group of community members in 2015 with a focus on providing food sustainability, commerce development, and a welcoming family atmosphere to meet the needs of our community. To more effectively build diversity into our organization, we have expanded our board from nine seats to twelve to ensure that we have a diverse, capable board with the necessary skills, perspectives, and community representation to guide our market into the future and sustain it for years to come. This expansion makes room for community members, students, vendors, and those with specialized skills and experience to lead our organization into the future.
