Matsu Valley Rebuild Mission

Matsu Valley Rebuild offers affordable used and surplus building materials with the goal of diverting reusable items from the waste stream. The benefits of sustainability are promoted through basic education, public programs and community building.

Purpose of the Matsu Valley Rebuild Board of Directors

The Board of Directors will advocate for the organization, promote its endeavors and ensure its fiscal stability.

Criteria for Board Members

Matsu Valley Rebuild’s mission is to offer affordable used and surplus building materials with the goal of diverting reusable items from the waste stream. The benefits of sustainability are promoted through basic education, public programs and community building.

Volunteers who serve on the Board of Directors should be familiar with MVR and its general operation and stewards of its mission and programs. Preference is given to individuals who have volunteered at MVR, sat on an MVR committee or served at an MVR event.

Responsibilities of Matsu Valley Rebuild Board of Directors

  • Establish policies for administering programs and services, which are in harmony with the mission, values and vision of the organization.
  • Employ the Executive Director.
  • Secure funds required for current expenses through support and participation of fundraising efforts.
  • Ensure that the Matsu Valley Rebuild’s financial affairs are conducted in accordance with established policies.
  • Ensure that the Matsu Valley Rebuild’s property is maintained in a reasonable state of repair.

 

  • Performance Expectations/Duties of Matsu Valley Rebuild Board Members
  • Believe in and be an active advocate and ambassador for the values, mission, vision and programs of Matsu Valley Rebuild.
  • Represent the organization to the community, at events, with other organizations or with private individuals. Speak proudly and positively and inform the organization of the perception and perspective of the community.
  • Attend monthly meetings and participate in committees, special events and fundraising projects to the best of your ability.
    • Attend regularly
    • Become well-informed (in advance) on all agenda items
    • Contribute knowledge and express points of view based on experience
    • Consider other points of view, make constructive suggestions, and help the board make decisions reflecting the thinking of the total group
  • Assume board leadership responsibilities as requested and as possible (such as committee chairperson, elected board officer, etc.).
  • Use personal and professional contacts and expertise for the benefit of the organization.
  • Become a financial supporter of the organization at a level significant to you each calendar year.
  • Assist with fundraising to finance the Matsu Valley Rebuild.
  • Understand the organization and its issues including programs, policies and services by reviewing materials, participating in discussions and asking strategic and critical questions.
  • Understand and inform the board of the needs of the community, society and constituents.
  • Follow conflict-of-interest and confidentiality policies and inform the board of any potential conflicts, whether real or perceived.
  • Suggest possible nominees to the board who can make significant contributions to the work of the board and the organization. 

Board Member Term of Office (per by-laws Article III, Section 4)

Members of the Board of Directors shall serve three year terms. Their terms shall be staggered so that at the time of each annual meeting, the terms of approximately one-third (1/3) of all members of the Board of Directors shall expire. The initial board of three members shall be elected to three term lengths: one (1) year, two (2) years and three (3) years.

Meeting Attendance

In addition to the monthly meetings with the full board, you may be asked to participate in the following to the best of your ability:

  • Standing committee meetings (1-2, meetings vary)
  • Ad hoc committee (as needed)
  • Special events (as announced)
  • Organization’s program events (as board representative)

Through basic education, community-building and local involvement the benefits of sustainability will be promoted. We will provide a resource to help strengthen the environmental, economic and community fabric of the Mat-Su Valley.


Briefly describe your board culture.

We have two women and two men, age range from late 30's to mid 60's. We welcome diverse perspective and input in our organization and our programs.


Why is board diversity important to this organization?

Diversity reflects our society, it reflects our customers and our community. If we don't include and consider diversity as people and an organization we are not building or supporting our entire community.
