Board Member • The Last Frontier Honor Flight

The Last Frontier Honor Flight board members provide Honor Flight missions for Alaskan veterans each year through hands on leadership, governance, fundraising, logistics, and organizational stewardship. The organization runs entirely on volunteer labor — there are no paid staff. Board members are not just advisors, they are the organization, and they contribute to meaningful work honoring Alaskan veterans. Every mission, every relationship, every detail is the responsibility of, and executed by someone on this board or core volunteers.

This is not a ceremonial position. Board members carry the full responsibilities of a nonprofit — governance, strategy, finances, compliance, sustainability — and they are accountable to execute the hands-on operational details of running two Honor Flight Missions every year.

This model has driven our success for over a decade. The board is actively working to expand engagement of non-board volunteers as part of long-term sustainability — but for now, board members are fully responsible as active, hands-on contributors to ensure the success of every mission. 

Two roles, one person

R O L E 1

Operations leader

Directly responsible for planning and executing two Honor Flight Missions each year. Every detail — logistics, scheduling, veteran communications, volunteer coordination, and everything in between.

R O L E 2

Governance steward

Shares responsibility for strategic direction, financial stewardship, legal and regulatory compliance, brand integrity, and the long-term sustainability of the organization.

What board members actually do

Every operational area of the organization is the responsibility of a board member. That scope is wide and real:

• Trip logistics & on-the-ground coordination

• Veteran recruitment & database management

• Guardian & volunteer coordination

• Community outreach & presence

• Fundraising & grant development

• Communications & flight materials

• Technology & systems

• Strategic partner relationships

• Governance, compliance & financial stewardship

Responsibilities & expectations

Attend monthly meetings

Show up prepared, engaged, and ready to contribute. Review materials in advance, ask questions, and participate in discussion. Ad hoc meetings as needed.

Stay responsive

Monitor and reply to board communications (email, phone, voicemail, text) promptly — within 24 hours. Stay engaged between meetings too.

Work the missions

Help plan and execute Honor Flight Missions hands-on. Contribute across logistics, veteran outreach, event coordination, and volunteer management. Participate in missions and key events.

Be accountable

Take initiative to identify needs, solve problems, and follow through on commitments. Serve as the lead contributor for specific operational areas. Board members act as owners, not observers.

Support fundraising

Give personally at a meaningful level, make donor introductions, attend fundraising events, and serve as a community ambassador. Every board member contributes to organizational sustainability.

Use basic digital tools

Communicate via email (primary channel), collaborate on Google Drive, and join virtual meetings via Google Meet. Become familiar with and use database. Access, review, and contribute to shared materials.

Act with integrity

Maintain confidentiality of board discussions and sensitive information. Disclose and appropriately manage conflicts of interest. Represent the organization with professionalism at all times.

Stay grounded in the mission

Engage directly with veterans, guardians, and volunteers. Maintain a strong personal connection to the people we serve and the purpose behind the work.

What we’re looking for

Reliable — follows through on commitments without needing to be chased

Collaborative — genuinely supports fellow board members and volunteers

A self-starter — identifies needs, solves problems, takes initiative

Comfortable with basic digital tools (email, Google Drive, database, video calls)

Genuinely connected to the mission of honoring Alaska’s veterans

Time commitment

Expect 5 hours per month for broad governance activities.  Expect significant additional time each month to provide specific mission support; amount varies by role and by time. Time requirements are highest in advance of the Mission Fights, which occur in April and October each year.

The Last Frontier Honor Flight’s mission is to celebrate Alaska's veterans with a free trip to Washington D.C. to visit those memorials dedicated to honor their services and sacrifices. These trips are provided by donations and are no cost to the veterans.
