Current Position Description

VP of Development

POSITION CONCEPT: Responsible to the council president for building an organization capable of executing the council’s overall development plan in support of the strategic plan by raising the required operating funds to meet the annual council budget, capital funds for land and facilities to provide a quality program for young people, and endowment gifts to augment the council’s trust fund. Coordinates strategic major gifts and special events to support fundraising efforts.

 

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS:

• A board member mindset: “noses in, fingers out”. This is a governance role and not an operating role.
• Demonstrated leadership skills as seen in the “real life” of the candidate outside and inside of Scouting.
• Diverse perspectives to help us ensure our programs are tailored for, and available to, all youth in our service area
• Deep functional experience in an area(s) relevant to Scouting America, especially (in alphabetic order):
– Development/Fund Raising
– Financial
– HR/Inclusion
– Legal
– Regulatory/Government experience
– Retail
– Safety
– Technology/Cyber
– Transformation/Organizational change
– Youth Serving
• Development/Fund-Raising/Philanthropy mindset and experience as we recapitalize the movement.
• The time, financial resources, and interest in serving on the Council Executive Board.

To expand a bit on these points, candidates should:
• As a given, support the Mission of the BSA, and our scout Oath and Law.
• Recognize that their fiduciary duty will be to the Council Executive Board.
• Have the time availability and financial ability to attend four in-person meetings per year, and several more virtual meetings.
• Have a willingness to support the BSA financially annually by “giving or getting” at least $2,500 to the Council Friends of Scouting campaign.
• Board members should be 2 of the following 3; “Doers, Donors, and Door Openers”

Our board is made up of dedicated leaders who have a love of youth development and growing our programs across our service area. They come from all walks of life and we are looking to expand that even more.


Why is board diversity important to this organization?

Our organization is growing and looking toward our future. We want to make sure we are thinking and including all of those who wish to grow in scouting and help us further our mission. Preparing young people to make moral and ethical decisions over their life time by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law
