A non-profit entity since 1994, Bunnell Street Arts Center’s mission statement is to spark artistic inquiry, innovation and equity to strengthen the physical, social and economic fabric of Alaska.
Board Member Roles and Responsibilities –
As a Board Member of Bunnell, I commit to the best of my ability to:
Board of Directors: Voluntary, legal governing body of a nonprofit.
A non-profit multidisciplinary arts center in Homer, Alaska and situated on Nichiłt’ana, lands of Ninilchik Village Tribe, Bunnell Street Arts Center sparks artistic inquiry, innovation, and equity to strengthen the physical, social and economic fabric of Alaska. Through exhibits, residencies, artist-in-schools, talks, workshops, performances, public art and exceptional community engagement, Bunnell increases opportunities and resources for a widespread area of diverse communities, from Indigenous and Russian Old Believer villages to BIPOC, LGBTQ+, youth at risk, and low-income Alaskans. Bunnell seeks to elevate Indigenous life ways, build artists' power, and create resilience, inclusion, connection, and healing for underserved artists and audiences across the circumpolar north and beyond.
Our values include the pursuit of excellence, innovation and dynamism; care for people, place, and our community; and the generation of meaning, connection, curiosity, and authentic experiences.
The people on Bunnell's Board of Directors are all artists - though not everyone would explicitly identify as such - in that they bring a curiosity and creativity to their lives and areas of expertise. The Board meets 6 times yearly by zoom and once a year in person. We value a culture of respect, listening and learning, and the Board has led much of that learning for the organization. The Board has stewarded this organization through abundance and challenge, and above all keeps Bunnell connected to the people and mission that it serves.
Bunnell's Board of Directors include people from different races, ethnicities, gender, sexual orientation, economic backgrounds, occupations, artistic practices, and community networks. These people help our organization learn - sometimes in public - how to better serve artists and communities across Alaska. Bunnell was created for and by artists. As it grows to meet the needs of more diverse people and communities across Alaska, it must be led by people from those communities.
