Board Member

Current Position Description

Board Member

Bike Anchorage is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit governed by a volunteer Board of Directors that provides strategic leadership, financial stewardship, and organizational accountability. In practical terms, the Board is how Bike Anchorage continues to punch above its weight, win real transportation changes, and build a city that works for people.

We are a working board. That means directors don’t just vote at meetings, they roll up their sleeves and help run the organization alongside our (very hardworking!) single paid staff member.

Board members take on different pieces of work based on their skills and interests, such as:

  • Fundraising & donor stewardship
  • Community events & volunteer coordination
  • Outreach and advocacy
  • Policy & communications
  • Partnerships and sponsorships
  • Organizational planning and strategy

This structure allows us to execute big projects and high-impact advocacy without a large staff.

We want our board members to grow as leaders. Directors are encouraged to pursue the areas that interest them most and play to their strengths. Whether you’re energized by events, policy, fundraising, community engagement, or operations, there’s room to make meaningful contributions.

Board service includes:

  • Opportunities for professional development & training
  • Access to a statewide and national network of transportation, planning, and advocacy partners
  • Skill-building experience in nonprofit governance, fundraising, communications, and strategy
  • A chance to directly influence transportation policy and culture in Anchorage

There’s no one “right” profile for a board member. We welcome people with diverse lived experiences, identities, and professional backgrounds. Some directors come from transportation or planning; others come from marketing, business, law, finance, design, education, logistics, or community work. The unifying thread is a sincere interest in making Anchorage more bike-friendly.

What to Expect

Board members typically:

  • Serve a two-year term
  • Attend monthly board meetings
  • Take on at least one substantive board role, project, or portfolio
  • Participate in fundraising and community engagement efforts as able
  • Support events, advocacy campaigns, and organizational priorities throughout the year

Bike Anchorage is our city's largest bicycle advocacy organization.

Our mission is to make Anchorage more bicycle-friendly. We advocate for a vibrant, livable, and healthy city where it is safe and practical to go by bike.
