Briefly describe your board culture.

The board is highly active and values getting things done. We train and promote from positions as board interns, to committee members, to directors, and finally to the officer level. People get involved because they have careers in people management and HR, or because they see the importance of human resources in making their businesses thrive.

Why is board diversity important to this organization?

ASHRM aligns with SHRM on diversity and inclusion. SHRM promotes Inclusion and Diversity (I&D) as essential to workplace success, emphasizing merit-based access and belonging through its BEAM framework. It has shifted away from the term “DEI,” focusing instead on inclusion as the catalyst for meaningful change.

The BEAM Framework (Belonging Enhanced by Access through Merit) is designed to guide organizations in implementing legally compliant and performance-driven I&D initiatives. Its five core principles are:

Inclusion: Opportunities open to all, regardless of protected status
Access for All: Engaging talent from every background
Merit-Driven: Advancement based on qualifications and performance
Inclusive and Accessible Information
Skills-First Optimization
