Current Position Description

Board of Directors
  • Directors serve three years. There are five (5) Board seats open for a three-year term.  The Director commitment includes attendance at regular board meetings (monthly via teleconference), attendance at the Spring and Fall retreats, and a willingness to serve on at least one committee.
  • The President-Elect serves three years. In 2025, they will assist with the planning of the Alaska Health Summit, followed by serving as President in 2026. In 2027, as Past President, they will serve as the Chair of the Alaska Health Summit Planning Committee.  
  • The Student Representative serves one year.  This is a voting position meant to serve as a liaison between the ALPHA Board of Directors and the university student community, representing student interests to the Board.  The Student Representative is expected to attend ALPHA’s Monthly Board of Directors meetings via Zoom, attend the ALPHA Board Retreats, and participate in Committee work.  The Student Representative must be a Student member of ALPHA in good standing.   

ALPHA’s Board members typically commit 2-3 hours per week for Board and Committee meetings and work in addition to 2 full-day retreats per year.

The purpose of the Association is to advance the public’s health. In order to achieve its purpose, the Association shall aim to:

a. define and influence public health policies, actions and legislation which affect the health and well-being of Alaskans;

b. promote and coordinate communication among health and public health related professionals throughout the State regarding their public health
concerns;

c. provide an effective forum for members of the Association and other participants to discuss public health issues, and to identify means by which these issues might be resolved to improve the health and well-being of our citizens;

d. serve as an information source for the public;

e. promote and encourage collection of reliable data which will enable accurate assessments of public health and health-care delivery systems in Alaska, and provide a basis for sound public health policy decisions;

f. promulgate the principle that health is both a collective responsibility of the state and community and an individual responsibility of its citizens.

These purposes shall be forwarded the by the application of the following core values:

• Integrity: Our actions will always be ethical and based on the best available information.
• Excellence: We will strive to be effective in all our undertakings.

Each Board Member is expected to make an annual financial contribution, separate from annual membership dues, to the Association in an amount that is
personally meaningful. The Governance Committee shall track 100% participation in Board giving internally for institutional funding readiness. Public
disclosure of individual gift amounts shall not be required.

Are travel expenses related to board service reimbursed? If so explain.

Yes. Travel/catering/facility expenses incurred by Board Members for Retreats and annual meeting are reimbursed within pre-arranged budget.
