Board of Directors

Do you want to help advance ALPHA’s mission to engage all Alaskans in public health? Service on the ALPHA Board of Directors is an excellent opportunity to become a public health leader in Alaska. 
 
ALPHA actively seeks to promote diversity on the Board in order to best represent and support our diverse community.  People from outside the traditional public health sector are encouraged to apply.  We especially hope to recruit Board members with skills related to nonprofit governance and business development including accounting & finance, public communications, legal & regulatory compliance, and public policy/advocacy.  

Applicants must be ALPHA members in good standing in order to serve on the Board and abide by Board Policies including board giving, conflict of interest disclosure, and meeting attendance requirements as outlined in our bylaws.   

ALPHA’s Board members typically commit 2-4 hours per month for Board and Committee meetings and work in addition to 2 full-day retreats per year (Spring and Fall).

The 2027 Board of Directors will include the following positions:

• The President-Elect serves three years. In 2027, they will assist with the planning of the Alaska Health Summit, followed by serving as President in 2028. In 2029, as Past President, they will serve as the Chair of the Alaska Health Summit Planning Committee.  
• Directors serve three years. There are four (4) Board seats open for a three-year term.  The Director commitment includes attendance at regular board meetings (monthly via teleconference), attendance at the Spring and Fall retreats, and a willingness to serve on at least one committee.
• The Affiliate Representative to the Governing Council (ARGC) serves a three-year term. Candidates must be a current member of both APHA and ALPHA and are responsible to: serve as an assistant to the President and Association to support and stimulate the APHA and ALPHA relationship; be informed and prepared with the policy direction of ALPHA in order to effectively represent ALPHA within the APHA Governing Council; assist the APHA, in cooperation with the President and legislative chair, with legislative advocacy and implementation of approved APHA policies and resolutions; attend Affiliate Leadership meeting(s) preceding and during the APHA Annual Meeting; and other duties as determined by APHA for the ARGC.
• The Student Representative serves one year.  This is a voting position meant to serve as a liaison between the ALPHA Board of Directors and the university student community, representing student interests to the Board.  The Student Representative is expected to attend ALPHA’s Monthly Board of Directors meetings via Zoom, attend the ALPHA Board Retreats, and participate in Committee work.  The Student Representative must be a Student member of ALPHA in good standing.

The purpose of the Alaska Public Health Association is to advance the public’s health.

In order to achieve its purpose, the Association shall aim to:

a. define and influence public health policies, actions and legislation which affect the health and well-being of Alaskans;

b. promote and coordinate communication among health and public healthrelated professionals throughout the State regarding their public health concerns;

c. provide an effective forum for members of the Association and other participants to discuss public health issues, and to identify means by which these issues might be resolved to improve the health and well-being of our citizens;

d. serve as an information source for the public;

e. promote and encourage collection of reliable data which will enable accurate assessments of public health and health-care delivery systems in Alaska, and provide a basis for sound public health policy decisions;

f. promulgate the principle that health is both a collective responsibility of the state and community and an individual responsibility of its citizens.
