Position: Member at Large

Time commitment: Five to ten hours per month (meetings, committee meetings, events)

Term: Two-years, appointed or elected annually at the Annual General Meeting. May serve a maximum of six years.

Organization Overview:

Tanaina Child Development Center is a nonprofit organization dedicated to collaborating with families and the community to foster children’s development. We are committed to promoting a love of learning by providing quality early childhood education through evidence-based curriculum in a supportive setting. Tanaina serves Anchorage community families with children 12 months to 6 years of age through its year-round childcare programs.

Position Summary:

The Tanaina Board of Directors provides governance, strategic leadership, fiduciary oversight to support the mission and long-term sustainability of the organization and support to children and families served by the Center. Board Members act as ambassadors for the organization and contribute their expertise, networks, and leadership to help advance organizational goals. They are collectively accountable to children and their families, the community, funders, and other stakeholders.

Primary Duties

Board of Directors and Officers will:

  • Actively participate in Board meetings and related activities
  • Respect diverse perspectives, advocate in the best interests of TCDC children and families, and work collaboratively toward shared goals and solutions
  • Support and uphold decisions made by the Board
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the Center’s Strategic Plan
  • Attend and participate in Board committees or special projects, as needed
  • Support fundraising, community engagement, and advocacy efforts of the Center
  • Adhere to the Board’s bylaws, code of conduct, and governance policies
  • Participate in the review and oversight of organizational policies and governance practices
  • Support the development, review, and oversight of operational and governance policies
  • Participate in the hiring, supervision, evaluation and, when necessary, transition of the Executive Director and Assistant Director
  • Assist in the recruitment, orientation, and mentorship of new Board members
  • Review and approve contractual agreements and partnerships that support the mission and operations of the Center
  • Serve as an ambassador for the Center and remain informed about community needs and issues relevant to its work
  • Help ensure accountability, transparency, and long-term sustainability of the organization

Qualifications

The following are considered key qualifications:

  • Commitment to the mission, values, and strategic direction of the Center
  • Availability and willingness to actively participate in Board meetings, committees, and related responsibilities
  • Commitment to collaborative leadership and effective decision-making
  • Knowledge of or experience in non-profit governance, including areas such as strategic planning, policy development, compliance, fundraising, and grant writing
  • Understanding of the Early Childhood sector, including current trends, advocacy efforts, funding opportunities, and state and local priorities
  • Professional knowledge or experience in one or more of the following areas: marketing, communications, legal, finance, accounting, human resources, small business leadership, or financial planning
  • Experience with community engagement, partnership development, or stakeholder relations
  • Ability to contribute strategic thinking, sound judgment, and a collaborative perspective to Board discussions
