AWBRC Board of Directors’ job description involves strategic governance, financial oversight, and mission advocacy. Key responsibilities include setting the organization’s mission and strategic plan, approving budgets, providing support to ensure legal compliance, and overseeing the executive director or staff. The board also acts as an ambassador for the organization, supports fundraising efforts, and participates in critical decisions on center policies.
Governance and oversight
- Strategic planning: Develop and implement long-term strategic plans to guide the organization’s mission, including growth and program expansion.
- Policy setting: Establish and approve key policies submitted by the committee chair (education, rehabilitation, fundraising/public relations, and finance)
- Executive oversight: Hire, supervise, and evaluate the executive director, ensuring alignment with the organization’s mission.
- Legal and fiscal compliance: Ensure the organization adheres to all applicable federal, state, and local laws, and manages finances responsibly.
Financial stewardship
- Budget approval: Review and approval of the annual budget and monitor financial performance throughout the year.
- Fundraising support: Actively participate in fundraising efforts and help secure resources through personal contributions, networking, and donor relations.
- Financial accountability: Maintain accountability to donors and funders and ensure the prudent use of organizational resources.
Mission and advocacy
- Mission embodiment: Serve as a steward of the organization’s mission, vision, and values.
- Community ambassadorship: Act as a public representative, building relationships with the community, media, donors, and other partner organizations.
- Program promotion: Promote the organization’s purpose, programs, and educational outreach initiatives within the community.
- Performance evaluation: Monitor the effectiveness of programs and initiatives against key performance indicators to ensure the organization is making progress toward its goals.

AWBRC's board culture is one that moves beyond formal governance dictating how our members interact. We fully enlist differences of opinion unique vantage points, areas of expertise, and questions raised seeking thoughtful and productive resolutions. It consists of a respectful partnership amongst themselves and the executive director.

AWBRC's Board of Directors are expected to personally make a monthly or annual contribution, that they are comfortable with, to the organization of , as some grants funders require this. Among the board members' roles and responsibilities is to ensure the organization has sufficient resources to advance its mission by actively supporting fundraising efforts by soliciting donations.
