Treasurer, Board of Directors

About AYO

Currently celebrating its 60th anniversary season, Alaska Youth Orchestras (AYO) has been a cornerstone of youth performing arts in Southcentral Alaska since 1965. Through its three performance ensembles and related programs, the organization reaches over 160 youth every year (grade 4 through college). AYO’s flagship program, the Anchorage Youth Symphony, is a fully-symphonic ensemble drawing over 85 top-performing youth musicians from all over Anchorage.

Position

The Treasurer will support the work of AYO’s board, providing mission-based leadership and strategic governance with particular attention to the financial state of the organization. While day-to-day operations are led by AYO’s Executive Director, the Board-CEO relationship is a partnership, and the appropriate involvement of the Board is both critical and expected.

AYO is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, with an annual budget of approximately $300k. The Executive Director currently handles all receipts/payments, bookkeeping, reconciliation, and financial reporting. Specific Treasurer responsibilities include:

Leadership, governance and oversight

  • Serving as a trusted advisor to the Executive Director as they implement AYO’s strategic plan
  • Approving AYO’s annual budget and material business decisions; being informed of, and meeting all, legal and fiduciary responsibilities
  • Chairing the AYO Board Finance Committee; monitoring and reporting to the AYO Board on the organization’s financial condition
  • Reviewing preparation of AYO’s IRS Form 990 filing
  • Reviewing agenda and supporting materials prior to board and committee meetings
  • Serving on committees and taking on special assignments
  • Assisting the board in identifying and recruiting other Board Members
  • Representing AYO to stakeholders; acting as an ambassador for the organization.

Board terms/participation

AYO’s Board Members serve a three-year term, eligible for re-appointment. Board meetings are generally held bi-monthly (currently on 3rd Tuesdays, 5:30 – 7:00 pm AK time). The 2025-26 meeting schedule is as follows:

– Tue, May 19, 2026 (5:30 – 7:00 pm) – Regular Meeting
– Tue, Jun. 16, 2026 (5:30 – 7:00 pm) – Annual Meeting

In person attendance is prioritized at all regularly scheduled meetings of the board. A virtual attendance option is also available at most meetings (via Microsoft Teams).

Finance committee meetings are held monthly (currently on 2nd Mondays, 3:30 – 4:00 pm AK time). They are currently conducted via conference call. Meeting day/time is adjustable as needed.

Special meetings of the board and other committee meetings are held in coordination with full board meetings.

Fundraising

AYO Board Members are expected to make a financial contribution to AYO at least once every calendar year. The donation shall be an amount that is meaningful to each Director. So that AYO can credibly solicit contributions from foundations, organizations, and individuals, AYO expects to have 100 percent of Board Members make an annual contribution that is commensurate with their capacity.

Qualifications

This is an opportunity for an individual who is passionate about AYO’s mission, has professional experiences in finance and accounting, and demonstrates commitment to volunteering and/or prior board leadership. Selected Board Members will have achieved leadership stature in business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector. Their accomplishments will allow them to attract other well-qualified, high-performing Board Members.
