Current Position Description

Mat-Su Advisory Board

The member of the Mat-Su YMCA Advisory Board provides strategic guidance, support and community insights to help grow YMCA programs and presence in the Mat-Su Valley.  Advisory Board members are expected to bring their expertise, networks and passion for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility to advance the mission of the YMCA.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Advisory Role: Offer advice and recommendations on strategic initiatives, program and policies that align with the YMCA mission. Act as a sounding board for the Mat-Su YMCA Branch Director and the CEO of the YMCA of Alaska.
  2. Community Engagement: Represent the YMCA in the community, promoting its mission and programs.  Foster relationships with local leaders, organizations and potential partners.
  3. Fundraising Support: Assist in identifying potential funding sources and promoting fundraising initiatives.  Participate in fundraising events and campaigns as needed.
  4. Advocacy: Advocate for the YMCA’s interests at the local and regional levels. Help raise awareness of the YMCA impact and programs within the community. Help support specific initiatives.
  5. Meetings and Participation: Attend regular advisory board meetings and participate actively in discussions.

  1. Passion for the YMCA’s mission and values.
  2. Strong communication skills.
  3. Ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups of people.
  4. Willingness to engage in fundraising and community outreach efforts.
  5. Willing to be part of growing an organization into a contributing partner in the Mat-Su Valley.

As a growing organization in the Mat-Su, raising funds to help cover operating costs as programs grow is essential. All members are expected to contribute in a meaningful way and to actively participate in fundraising activities.

Is there any additional information you would like prospective board members to know?

The Mat-Su YMCA volunteers started their efforts over 15 years ago with the first summer camp programs beginning in 2018. The YMCA now has a school age childcare site, summer day camp and swim lesson programs. The long-range goal is to continue to grow programs and the development of a full facility YMCA to serve the Mat-Su Valley.
